By Wayne Pantini, PDI President
It is a great honor for me to serve in the role of PDI President this year. PDI thrived under Jason Hutcheson’s leadership in 2015. Your board of directors and I are committed to continuing this momentum.
The first task out of the gate is membership renewal. Members should have received their dues statement to renew membership for 2016.
We believe all of our members are a tremendous asset to this organization! The networking and mentoring opportunities are endless. Our spring event/fall conference, legislative efforts, webinars, website resources and newsletters ensure you receive significant membership value. We appreciate each of our members and thank them for their past support thru membership, volunteering and attending PDI events.
Developing Iowa takes many more people than those assigned the job title of "economic developer". Attracting and retaining business in Iowa involves city and state officials, governmental agencies, real estate professionals, workforce and education experts, legal, financial and construction talent and knowledgeable people from all divisions of transportation and utilities. While completing your dues renewal, think about those professionals you work with and invite them to join PDI as well.
Learn more about your member benefits at http://www.pdiowa.com/join-pdi/. Join your peers again and invest in your professional development while advancing the economic base in Iowa today. By connecting with a network of over 330 PDI members ready and anxious to work with you and learn more about your role in making Iowa the best place to work, live and enjoy.

• Iowa Workforce Development's Laborshed Study
Over the last 15 years, Iowa Workforce Development's Laborshed Study has been a unique and effective
economic development tool. Communities throughout Iowa use it to expand their existing businesses,
attract prospective employers, maintain a high quality workforce, and make data-driven decisions.
Unlike typical labor market information data, the Laborshed Study analyzes labor market information
based upon commuting patterns into local areas regardless of jurisdictional (city, county, or state)
boundaries. The commuting patterns are determined through data provided by community employers.
This reporting by employers displays the community's true labor market area. Workforce characteristics
are then collected and reported for residents of this employee defined labor market area.

• Am I Considered A Professional?
LaDene H. Bowen, CEcD, FM, HLM
Often I am asked, "When did you get certified in economic development?" In some ways, it seems like yesterday in 1993 enjoying my PDI comrades and celebrating being the first certified female in Iowa. I remember the group stating, "you passed the exam nationally, now you need to pass in Iowa." They proceeded to (in jest) grill me with Iowa-style questions. Now, as I understood, was considered a "professional."
