Himar Hernandez
Originally from Spain, Himar came to Ottumwa as an exchange student at the age of 15. He has an AA from Indian Hills Community College, a B.A. in Public Administration and Political Science from Buena Vista University and a Master in Business Leadership from William Penn University. Himar is the Assistant Director for Community and Economic Development at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and previously was the Director of the New Iowan Center in South East Iowa. Himar is co-author of several research papers and his work in small rural communities has been featured in Good Morning America, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Wall Street Journal and NBC Today. He received the Passport to Prosperity Award in 2013 and was named one of 14 people to watch in 2014 by the Des Moines Register. He serves on the AEA Board representing the Ottumwa School District and also serves on the Legacy Foundation Board.


 CDFA — USDA Meeting in Des Moines on April 12-13

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office of Rural Development is hosting the Iowa Public Private Partnership Multistate Meeting, facilitated by CDFA, on April 12-13, 2016. The focus of this two-day meeting will be on building public-private partnerships for rural communities. Day one will focus on issues related to financing healthcare projects. Day two will address financing educational facilities. The Iowa Public Private Partnership Multistate Meeting will be held at the Embassy Suites Des Moines Downtown, 101 East Locust Street, Des Moines.

 Branstad, Reynolds Remind Iowans to Sign up Before April 11 for the Future Ready Iowa Summit
Future Ready Iowa Summit will take place on Tuesday, April 19 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines

Today, Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds are reminding Iowans from all over the state to sign up before Monday, April 11, 2016, in order to secure their spot at the Governor's 2016 Future Ready Iowa Summit which takes place on Tuesday, April 19 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.


 ED Workshop — Mark Your Calendar

"The Partners, the Profession and the Process" workshop for those new to economic development or new to Iowa is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12, 2016, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Farm Bureau Office, 5400 University Avenue, West Des Moines, Iowa.

Plan to arrive by 8:45 a.m. Parking is free in the guest lot at Farm Bureau. An interactive day is planned. You will meet with PDI veterans that will lead discussions, make introductions, and answer questions. The session will conclude by 12:00 noon. There is NO COST to attend. Deadline to register is July 1.

 Hog-processing Plant Could Bring 2,000 Jobs to Mason City

Mason City is on the brink of landing a hog-processing operation that is expected to employ 2,000 workers in its first two years. Officials declined to name the company. An official announcement is expected later this month after more details have been worked out.


 ISU to Become Regional Center for Food Safety

Thanks to a three-year, $950,000 grant, Iowa State University will host the new North Central Regional Center for Food Safety Training, and be able to better help food growers and processors comply with new federal regulations. According to the ISU Assistant Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition Angela Shaw, Ames will be the site of one of four regional centers, and serve 12 Midwestern states, ranging from the Dakotas to Ohio.


 State Board OKs $840,000 for Events Center in Sheldon, Iowa

The Vision Iowa Board on Wednesday approved an $840,000 grant to help finance a $5.3 million events center in Sheldon. The project calls for a 14,500-square-foot facility just south of the Holiday Inn Express, near the U.S. Highway 60 interchange on the city's east side.


 SBA Names City of Sioux City as the 2016 Iowa SBA Small Business Community of the Year

The Iowa District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration has named the city of Sioux City as the recipient of its 2016 Iowa SBA Small Business Community of the Year Award. This is the second year for the award, which highlights community efforts to support small business. Communities (defined as a city, town, county, regional economic development or planning district) were invited to submit nominations to the SBA's Iowa District Office showcasing their efforts to support small businesses. Lisa Rivera Skubal
Consultant Connect, a consulting agency for economic developers and site consultants, has named Lisa Rivera Skubal, Vice President of Economic Development for the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber to its 2016 list of North America's Top 50 Economic Developers. The economic development professionals selected for this list were nominated by their colleagues in both the economic development industry and the site consultant community for excellent practices, innovation and success in building the communities they serve. Skubal is the first economic development professional in the State of Iowa to be named to the list.

 Le Mars Company Seeks State Funds for $17.8M Expansion

A Le Mars-based cold storage company is seeking state tax credits to construct a $17.8 million expansion to an existing facility. Nor-Am Cold Storage, Inc., has applied for the state Workforce Housing Tax Credit program. The application will be discussed by the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board on Tuesday.


 USM Wear Technologies Expanding with New Distribution Center

USM Wear Technologies LLC could double its workforce as an expansion project at its Eldora plant opens sometime in early April, the company said recently. USM Wear Tech expects to double its workforce, from 15 to "probably" 30 with the expansion, said Carl Thielen, chief operations officer of the company that has been operating in Eldora since its founding in 1993.


 Deere Acquires Stake in Hagie Manufacturing
Clarion company is U.S. leader in high-clearance sprayers

Reuters, March 29, 2016

Deere & Co. said Tuesday it has acquired a majority stake in Hagie Manufacturing, allowing the farm and construction machinery manufacturer to enter the high-clearance sprayer market. Deere does not currently produce a "high-clearance" sprayer, which allows farmers to spray fields with fertilizers and pesticides later in the growing season.


 CIPCO Launches Iowa's Largest Utility Based Solar Project

Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) launches Iowa's largest utility based solar project on six sites across the service delivery territory. In late 2015, CIPCO initiated an RFP for the development of utility-scale solar facilities to be located at several member cooperative sites in Iowa. The multi-site solar installation is the first phase in CIPCO's long-term plan to incorporate solar as an additional emissions-free resource within its generation assets. This initial phase will provide up to 5.5MWs AC of electricity for members served by CIPCO.
